NBC affiliate in Dothan, Alabama debuts this weekend

Dothan, Alabama was one of the last DMA's, or Designated Market Areas, without at least one of "Big Three" TV networks.

But that will change starting this weekend.

The Dothan Eagle reports that WRGX will become the area's new NBC affiliate tomorrow (Saturday, June 1).  That move replaces the NBC affiliates in Montgomery, Alabama (WSFA) and Panama City, Florida (WJHG), respectively.  The Dothan DMA currently includes Early County, Georgia (Blakely).

Stephanie Springer says goodbye to WALB

Here's the first really significant news on the SGE TV blog, and it's to say goodbye to a popular anchor at WALB Albany.

Near the end of the six o'clock newscast tonight (Thursday), Stephanie Springer announced that's she's leaving the NBC/ABC affiliate to move closer to her family in her home state of Florida. Prior to arriving at WALB, Springer also anchored and reported at longtime CBS affiliate WCTV in Thomasville/Tallahassee. She had been at WALB since 2009.

WTVM names new GM

WTVM Columbus finally has a new boss.

LedgerEnquirer.com reports that the longtime ABC affiliate named broadcast veteran Holli Steuart to replace the retiring Lee Brantley as the station's general manager Friday.  Brantley announced earlier this year that he's giving up the top post at WTVM.  He'll step down from that job by the end of July.

Welcome to the South Georgia Edition Television Blog!

This is the first-ever "official post" for the South Georgia Edition Television Blog!

If this is the first time you've visited SGE TV, welcome!

SGE TV covers the business of broadcast journalism and television in Albany, Columbus, and Macon, Georgia, as well as the Tallahassee, Florida/Thomasville/Valdosta, Georgia Designated Market Area (or DMA, as Nielsen Media defines it).

Why call this blog "South Georgia Edition Television"?  For those people who subscribed to TV Guide during its days as a digest-formatted magazine, TV Guide regularly published multiple regional editions throughout the U.S. from its founding in 1953, until 2005, when it discontinued that format to focus more on the TV personalities themselves.

One of those regional editions was the South Georgia Edition, which primarily covered Albany, Columbus, Macon, Tallahassee, and surrounding areas from 1973-2005.  In addition to those four markets, the South Georgia Edition also had program listings for secondary DMA's such as Jacksonville and Panama City, Florida, Dothan, Alabama, and Atlanta.  During the 1980's, listings for the Savannah stations were added.

Of course, there were other regional editions that TV Guide published over the years, from metropolitan area editions such as New York City, Chicago, and Atlanta, to editions that focused on portions of certain states, such as Eastern North Carolina, Northern Florida, or Pennsylvania-New York State, or even a single state like South Carolina.

But by far, the South Georgia Edition likely had the most wide open coverage area of any edition TV Guide had published.  In fact, over the years it was published, the SGE had listings for as many as eight NBC affiliates, seven CBS affiliates, and (maybe) seven ABC affiliates.

SGE TV will cover anything and everything regarding TV in the four markets listed above, as well as the neighboring markets on any occasion.  We might even have a few "blasts from the past" occasionally.
